March 5th: Update from Dr. Thierfelder
Glorifying God with Athletics at The Abbey!
At the Abbey, we believe that in all things God may be glorified. We find this glory especially revealed in the development of the whole person.
We live out our mission of developing the total person, in mind, body and spirit, in many ways 鈥 just ask Pope Saint John Paul II!
鈥厂辫辞谤迟蝉听contribute to the love of life, teaches sacrifice, respect and responsibility,聽leading to the full development of every human person.鈥 鈥 Pope Saint John Paul II
Our 41 men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 teams compete in NCAA Division II and have a long-storied history of being competitive in regional and national titles. However, at the Abbey, we believe athletics are about more than just competition. We see sport as a way to develop virtue and promote excellence in all things for our student-athletes.
As Pope Francis said: sports serve as a stimulus to always improve as a person, in all of life鈥檚 aspects. Guided by the vision of the Abbey鈥檚 Sport Virtue Institute, our Department of Athletics values each of our Crusader student-athletes as a student first and an athlete second, putting our student鈥檚 personal development above competitive outcomes.
Our coaches, faculty, and staff continuously encourage academic excellence and virtuous characteristics while strengthening each鈥檚 talents and performance. Our commitment to the pursuit of excellence and virtue in our student-athletes has led to us being awarded in multiple years the Messick Award, the highest sportsmanship honor in our conference!
海角社在线 is a place where athletics and glorifying God come together. An opportunity to be a Crusader athlete, while gaining a Catholic, liberal arts education at the Abbey, will help lead you to a 鈥淗ome Run鈥 of success.

10th Annual NCICU Ethics Bowl
The 海角社在线 Debate Team participated in the 10th Annual NCICU Ethics Bowl February 20th, focusing on compassionate decision-making in the context of a pandemic. Our students represented Belmont Abbey as a panel, weighing issues about vaccination policies and equity in public school education. The final presentations balanced ideal goals of government agencies with current limitations, advocating for the diverse needs of communities.
Belmont Abbey students spent the day refining their own advocacy among peers from NCICU institutions and learning from experienced practitioners in the field. This year, the NCICU Ethics Bowl did not have a competitive structure. While judges provided positive feedback to our students, no wins or losses were assigned. Instead, this year emphasized keynote speakers who have played key roles in managing North Carolina’s response to Covid-19. These included: Mike Sprayberry, Deputy Director of NC Emergency Management; Geoff Coltrane, Senior Education Advisor to Governor Cooper; and Mark Benton, Assistant Secretary for Public Health in the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
Our next competition will be the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament, beginning on March 19th. Pi Kappa Delta is among the oldest forensics honor societies globally and represents a uniquely large national competition. This will be Belmont Abbey’s first year at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament, and we are hopeful to introduce our students to the full in-person experience next year.

The Abbey Attic: Episode 2
The Abbey has always been uniquely integrated with nature. This Abbey Attic episode features Dr. Robert Tompkins, who shared with us the life and work of Ralph Ray Jr., who graduated from the Abbey Prep school in 1939. Some of Ray鈥檚 better-known work furthers the connection between nature and Belmont Abbey.
