海角社在线 Hosts Colloquium on Catholic Statesmanship
Belmont, N.C. (June 27, 2023) 鈥 海角社在线 announces the Colloquium on Catholic Statesmanship, at the Belmont House in Washington, D.C. this July. This four-day high school summer program examines the role of Catholic statesmanship in the American public square. Through daily seminars, rising junior and senior students engage with the writings and speeches of the most important Catholic intellectuals and politicians who grappled with the nuances of being both Catholic and American.
The Colloquium on Catholic Statesmanship at the Belmont House serves as an extension of Belmont Abbey鈥檚 work to return voices of faith to the public square. As a venue to bring together people of diverse beliefs, people in government, policy experts, students, and Catholic ecclesiastical leaders from around the world, the Belmont House opens its doors in service of Church and Country and seeks to spread the mission of Catholic morals and values on Capitol Hill.
Students will interact with professors and guest lecturers in a Socratic style, engaging in friendly, but spirited discussion on assigned texts. The seminar style lectures feature some of the most prominent and vocal voices of Catholic intellectuals today, including Robert A. Destro, Professor of Law at The Catholic University of America鈥檚 Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. and Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. As Assistant Secretary, he led the State Department鈥檚 worldwide policy and foreign assistance programs on human rights and democracy issues such as free and fair elections, Internet freedom, and the growth of the surveillance state. Another guest speaker is Nina Shea, a human rights lawyer of 40 years and Senior Fellow of the Hudson Institute, where she directs the Center for Religious Freedom. She works extensively for the advancement of religious freedom in U.S. foreign policy, as it confronts Islamic extremism, and authoritarian regimes around the world.
Seminar topics include Catholicism and Religious Liberty, Papal Reflections on the United States, The Declaration of Independence, and more, with tours of various D.C. sites, including the Heritage Foundation and the Capitol Grounds. Dr. Thomas Varacalli, Director of the Colloquium on Catholic Statesmanship and Honors College Professor at 海角社在线, shares, 鈥淥ur country needs young men and women to participate in the American public square as faithful Catholics. The Catholic Church has a rich intellectual tradition that can address many political, social, economic, and cultural issues. Our program introduces high school students to this tradition and ensures they develop the tools and resources necessary to engage in the public square as faithful Catholics.鈥

In addition, the titles from the 2nd Undergraduate Belmont Abbey Research Conference are also included in this journal.
The Belmont Undergraduate Capstones and Letters Journal publishes once a year and publishes senior capstones and other essays from 海角社在线 (BAC) students.

Dr. Christine Basil, Belmont Abbey Honors College professor, discusses the key problem she encounters in the youth of today. The essence of the Abbey is rooted in truth, and faculty like Dr. Basil recognize that students today are lonely because they have yet to learn that their own reason can ascend to the truth.
They need intellectual formation, and they need love. There is a deep insecurity in this generation, and at the Abbey, the sense of community and belonging provides them a home. Belmont Abbey stands as today鈥檚 college rooted in truth with a spiritual center that gives this generation what it desperately desires.

This week we celebrated July Fourth, commemorating our first steps toward freedom with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
In the words of that Declaration:聽We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.听
And for all the complicated ways the United States of America struggles with and aspires to these ideals on either side of the political aisle, I keep returning to the ways the Belmont Abbey monks and our campus home embrace these self-evident truths through hospitality, love, stability, stewardship, and all the Benedictine hallmarks that help to form our students in mind, body, and soul.
It reminds me that freedom isn鈥檛 the same as independence: that it鈥檚 the capacity to choose what is Good, True, and Beautiful – to recognize who and what we are in the sight of God. Only then can we effectively 鈥減ursu[e] happiness,鈥 live 鈥渓ife,鈥 or express our 鈥渃reated equal[ity]鈥 as children of God, made in His image and likeness.
So this weekend, as we clear the firework shreds and food wrappings out of our yards and driveways, I invite you to celebrate the paradoxical rootedness of freedom, as the monks of Belmont Abbey live it. Committed to the good of the college, the local community, and the country as a whole, their prayer and guidance show us how love – which is always concrete and always rooted in Truth, Goodness, and Beauty – frees us for eternal life.
